The American Cinematheque's annual
film noir series at the Egyptian started last night. It would take an unreasonable amount of energy to drag myself "over the hill," as Lucy puts it, every night of the series, but I'm looking forward to at least a few nights of pessimism, cynicism, fatalism and menace. First up is tonight's double bill:
Alias Nick Beal (pictured at left), starring the always terrific Ray Milland as the diabolical title character, and
Fly-by-Night with Richard Carlson, clocking in at a "sprightly" 74 minutes. You gotta love the running times on some of these older movies! They allow cranky old codgers like me to get to bed at a reasonable hour.
