You don't deserve a break today

Tonight the bookstore is running a big off-site talk and signing with a major author. We started selling tickets to this event on March 1 and ran out just a few days ago. This morning my office-mate Robyn got a call from a customer who wanted to see if she could finagle a (nonexistent) ticket out of us.

As Robyn told me and Patrick after she hung up, "This woman said, 'I'm a longtime customer and I have bought at least a hundred dollars' worth of books from you every month for the last twenty or thirty years. I know you said you were sold out of tickets and I know I'm calling really last-minute, but I thought, as such a good customer, that I'm entitled to --'"

"Wait," Patrick interrupted. "Did she actually use the word entitled?"

"Yeah," said Robyn.

Patrick said, "She must be a Yankees fan."

I have heard the "I have spent $100 at Vroman's every month..." line so many times I think I am going to puke.

Robyn should have replied, "Well, since you put it that way, we do have a secret stockpile of tickets but we are only giving them out to customers who tell us they spend $150 every month with us."
