What you can do this holiday season

I guess the pressures of the holiday season are hitting me early this year, as I'm preoccupied with thoughts of how to consume less and enjoy the holidays more. Here are a couple of ideas I've come up with; if you have others you'd like to share in the comments, please do so!

You can reject consumerism today, which is International Buy Nothing Day. (A second chance for those of us who missed or failed at National Buy Nothing Day yesterday.)

You can pledge to buy handmade gifts, as well as encourage others to do the same for you.

You can avoid chain stores and support local independent businesses.

You can donate to a worthy cause.

You can create an alternative gift registry.
