So far, only Howard and Lisa know this blog exists. Both of them have been very encouraging, but Howard seemed surprised that I plunged in without first posting some kind of mission statement. I think not having a guiding principle is exactly why I had the guts to start writing. I suppose I'm worried my entries will eventually drift into something like left-wing politics or film noir or my growing appreciation of Bettie Page, and that in six months I'll look back at my mission statement and think, "Hey. I said I was going to write about gardening and I haven't mentioned a single plant in weeks." This morning I realized that that's nothing to worry about, that if I'm really going to be writing about my life, How's Annie? is going to be all over the place. Thus, my goals:
How's Annie? will focus on books, films, and music. It will be filled with stories of my friends, family, and co-workers, plus various people that piss me off. It will be about crafting, cooking, and the endless process of figuring out what to do with the yard. It will contain recipes and pictures of things I like and political commentary. It's the story of working for an independently owned business in a chain store economy. Here you will read about my battles with weeds and my weight and insomnia and the stupid next-door neighbors who butchered our eucalyptus trees. And yes, at some point I will probably bring up my growing appreciation of Bettie Page. I hope to write often, but there's no way I will commit to a daily update.
How's that, Howard?
