My new flame

Sean and Curtis are currently in rehearsals for a play they're co-directing so I'm spending many of my evenings alone. Last night I curled up in the La-Z-Boy recliner with a slice of lemon pie, a new embroidery project, and my hot new girl-crush, Lana Turner. She was the featured artist of the day on TCM, and I was treated to not only the weepy Imitation of Life and the deliriously over-the-top murder and boozefest Madame X, but also a fascinating bio that featured a good deal of commentary by Lana's notorious daughter, Cheryl Crane. My favorite Lana quote: "I liked the boys, and the boys liked me." So unapologetic! She was so incredibly beautiful for such a long time; it was really disgusting to hear how Dore Schary, L.B. Mayer's replacement at MGM, thought she was "over the hill" and "aging" at 34. Besides last night's flicks, I think the only other Lana Turner pictures I've seen are The Postman Always Rings Twice (pretty good -- apparently she found John Garfield quite unattractive, as do I) and Peyton Place (excellent, with Lana in particularly fine form as a sexually repressed single mother with a dark past)... but now that her photo is (metaphorically) pinned inside my locker, I'll have to check out more of her oeuvre.
